The high ligand exchange ability is a peculiar feature of lanthanide complexes and of fundamental importance for their catalytic application. Even the thermodynamically very strong lanthanide alkoxide and amide bonds are kinetically labile as found in transamination and transalcoholysis reactions [158]. Donor ligand exchange as a rule occurs via dissociation processes and the exchange rate of water has been studied in detail in the context of biologically and medically relevant processes [286].
