Attach the arm fronts to the front posts with 2 Yz" deck screws. ATTACH THE BACK RAILS & SEAT SLATS Cut two 24 Y4" pieces of Y4 deck boards to make the armrests. Layout the armrest profile on each deck board and cut the boards using a jigsaw. The backside edge should have a curved taper of 1" starting 7" from the end. The armrests should be rounded at a 1" radius on both front corners .
44 • INSTALL THE STAND & HANG THE SWING The swing stand should be placed on level ground. A porch swing is not intended to swing fast or in a long arc, like a play swing does, so there is no need under normal use to anchor the stand to the ground. Hang the porch swing so the top front edge of the seat is approximately 16" off the ground (photo 7). The back edge of the swing should be level with the front edge or slightly lower. 5 Cut the posts to size. Then, use a compass to mark a 1%"-radius roundover cut on each bottom post corner (the roundovers improve stability). Position the arms on top of the square ends of the posts. The posts should be set back 1 W' from the front ends of the arm and I" from the inside edge of the arm. Fasten the arms to the posts with glue. Drill pilot holes in the arms and counterbore the holes. Then, drive 3" deck screws through the arms and into the posts (photo 4). Cut tapered arm braces from wood scraps, making sure the wood grain runs lengthwise.
