Each of the four described theoretical disciplines seems to contribute to an explanation of the phenomenon and several variables may be of importance; however, the review does not allow one to draw firm conclusions about the relative importance of various variables. Furthermore, in many cases variables that are found to be important in some studies are found to be insignificant in other studies. There are a number of reasons why this current state of affairs is not as surprising as it might seem.

The purpose of this and the next chapter is, therefore, to put forward a theoretical framework that can guide an analysis of the consequences of Dutch and Danish disability policies. This chapter reviews some of the literature within the area of the labour market integration of sick-listed workers. Against the background of this review the following chapter presents a theoretical model of labour market integration.
