To investigate why this should be, we have compared a group of patients with the histological changes of SRUS and rectal ulceration with a group with the histological changes alone. A high incidence of rectal prolapse (;:e:89%) was present in both groups. There were three differences between the groups. The patients with rectal ulceration were younger. They demonstrated a greater degree of overactivity in their sphincters during voiding, and voiding required a greater increase in intra-rectal pressure than in the patients without ulceration (unpublished observations).

Preston et al. [23] described such a method of measuring rectal pressure and volume in constipated patients, and called, by analogy with the cystometrogram, a proctometrogram. Not only can rectal sensation be recorded but the pressures at which sensation are noted can be measured [24].
