Multi-tenancy refers to “a principle in software architecture where a single instance of the software runs on a software-as-a-service (SaaS) vendor's servers, serving multiple client organizations (tenants)” [15]. Multi-tenancy is often contrasted with a multi-instance architecture in which separate software instances or hardware systems are built for various client organizations [15]. With a multi-tenant architecture, a software application is designed to virtually partition its data and configuration so that each client organization works with a customized virtual application instance through a customized graphical interface [9].
